Job Description

The Local Girl® Media Group
Full-Time w/Benefits Avail | Remote + Hoboken/North Jersey Area
Salary: $90,000–$110,000, commensurate with experience

About the Role

The Local Girl® Media Group is looking for a Senior Editor of Editorial + Social to join our growing team.

This is someone who loves digital editorial and social media and understands how the two work together to build a strong local media brand.

The ideal candidate has strong editorial judgment, professional social media experience, and a natural curiosity about what’s happening locally. You know how to spot a great story, understand what makes people stop scrolling, and can help grow The Local Girl’s voice across our websites, social platforms, newsletters, and more. You’ve worked in editorial journalism prior (writing, editing, but understand how all platforms work together to include social media).

This is a senior but hands-on role. We’re a small, collaborative media company, so we’re looking for someone who enjoys both leading and doing – you might be planning content strategy one day and editing a breaking story, brainstorming a Reel, or updating the content calendar the next.

If you’re creative, organized, chronically curious, and genuinely love local media, we’d love to hear from you!!

About The Local Girl

The Local Girl® Media Group is a hyperlocal digital media company covering local news, food + drink, things to do, lifestyle, small businesses, community happenings, local personalities, history, pop culture, and more (in multiple regions!).

Our goal is to create useful, entertaining, trustworthy content that makes our audiences feel more connected to where they live.

What We Offer

We’re a small, female-founded company, and we’re proud of the culture and benefits we’ve built for our team.

For full-time team members, we offer:

  • Two company-wide paid shutdown weeks each year (July + Dec)
  • Flexible, remote work with monthly team co-working opportunities
  • Health insurance + 401(k) offerings
  • Company-paid dental, vision, and life insurance
  • Unlimited sick days as needed (because no one should stress about a doc appt)
  • Paid pet bereavement leave (because our pets are also our family!)
  • Your birthday off when it falls on a weekday
  • Flexibility for appointments and the realities of life
  • Annual performance-based bonus opportunities
  • A collaborative team with direct access to leadership
  • A meaningful voice in the growth of a founder-led digital media company

What You’ll Be Doing

You’ll work closely with our Founder + Editor-in-Chief and our editorial and social teams to help shape and execute The Local Girl’s day-to-day content.

You’ll:

  • Help lead editorial planning and identify timely, interesting stories for our news writers + team
  • Assign and review digital editorial content
  • Maintain and evolve The Local Girl’s voice across editorial, social, and newsletters
  • Oversee editorial + social content calendars
  • Work with our social team to help them turn stories into engaging social content
  • Spot breaking news, local trends, pop culture moments, and conversations relevant to our communities
  • Use analytics and audience behavior to identify opportunities for growth
  • Help oversee writers, creators, freelancers, and contributors
  • Keep projects, assignments, and deadlines moving

We’re looking for someone who can move comfortably between big-picture thinking and hands-on execution.

Who We’re Looking For

Ideally, you have:

  • 5+ years of professional experience in digital editorial + journalism, social media, content, or a related field
  • Strong writing, editing, headline-writing, and editorial judgment (with past jobs/content you can show to prove it)
  • Professional social media experience with a publication, brand, or media company
  • Experience managing content calendars, projects, writers, creators, or freelancers
  • Canva, WordPress, Asana, Flo Desk knowledge
  • Strong organizational and operational skills
  • An understanding of Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, newsletters, web, and digital audience behavior
  • An interest in analytics, internet culture, trends, and pop culture
  • A proactive, collaborative attitude and willingness to jump in wherever needed

Local Knowledge Matters

The Local Girl is built around understanding the communities we cover, so we’re looking for someone based in or within easy reach of Hoboken and the surrounding North Jersey area.

Familiarity with Hoboken, Jersey City, Montclair, Jersey Shore, Bergen County, and surrounding areas is a big plus. You should be genuinely interested in the area’s restaurants, businesses, neighborhoods, history, personalities, culture, local lore, and niche New Jersey pop culture.

While our team works remotely, this person should be comfortable occasionally attending an event, visiting a local business, reporting on something happening in the community, or helping capture content on the ground (we all pitch in here and there).

To Apply

Please submit your résumé to [email protected] with the subject line SENIOR EDITOR POSITION + YOUR NAME and answer the four questions below. Feel free to include press clips or social work you’re most proud of, and – if you can – we’d love a quick 30-90-second intro video on why you’d be a great fit for this role 🙂

We’re not looking for essays – a few thoughtful sentences for each is plenty!!

  1. What’s one Local Girl story you’d pitch us right now, and why would our audience care?
  2. Tell us briefly about your professional editorial + social media experience. What have you personally owned or overseen? Please include 2–3 examples of work and briefly tell us your role in each.
  3. What’s one piece of Hoboken, Jersey City, or New Jersey lore, history, news, or pop culture you’ve gone down a rabbit hole about? Why did it interest you?
  4. Look at our recent editorial and social content. What’s one piece you think we did particularly well, and one you would have approached differently? Why?

The Local Girl® Media Group is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diverse perspectives and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for our team.
